Music Marketing Research

The Music Marketing research project was one of the most interesting ones we've had to do so far. While it might not have been as creative it did give us the base for what the next project is for. My group and I got the music genre Bluegrass, while I was not thrilled at first I was interested about the knowledge we could acquire learning about it. The directions were for each of us to research one comapany in the genre, and 2 artists/bands.

The case studies needed to be rich in information that we could use later on. The first part was the comapny research, for mine I chose Rebel Records, a notorious Blugrass company that has been in the business for about 40 years. Then the two artists I chose were Peter Rowan and Larry Sparks, both notorious for their extensive work in the industry past the various decades. Peter for one hand has made a name in the industry through his different style that would be considered more modern for the Bluegrass community. Larry on the other hand is quite the opposite, he prouds himself on the good work of keeping classice Bluegrass just the way it was, and from his point of view, the way it should be kept.

I did extensive research on both their Marketings and Distributions tecniques, and found that they shared several of them. Something that Peter has taken advantage of that many other Bluegrass singers haven't is using technology and the internet to promote himself through lives, not only does he record his live performances, he also streams them for the public to see all around the state. What I found for Larry's marketing was that he relied heavily on religion, while not surprised, it really stood out to me how many of his songs have a limited amount of lyrics that focus mostly on God and Christian values.

Example of my chart

Through this extensive research I was able to really understand what Bluegrass is in terms of how it can be marketed and distributed. While this genre of music wouldn't have been my first choice, I found myself enjoying getting to understand a whole different world I wouldn't have known in the first place.
